They have tried to balance the genders out as best as possible here; three of each.
Which means that if you want to play as the N7 Slayer, you have to play a male character. If you want to play the N7 Fury, you have to play a female character. My guess would be that they may release something later that allows you to have the opposite gender for each of these N7 characters, but that's only a wild guess.
Yet another way they failed even with the multiplayer, I guess.
Oh, and you can be a fucking collector in Multiplayer. A Krogan Warlord. There is even a Female Turian vanguard. They have Volus, Vorcha, Geth and Batarians to pick from along with the classic choices like Asari, Humans, Quarians, Turians, and Krogan.
Yeah, that is far from sucking.

Not to mention, it's made clear that Salarain females are in politics and never go into military. Same with Female Krogan.
And Collectors have no gender, as they have had such things removed over years of genetic manipulation. Geth also have no gender, and do not identify with any.
Vorcha females probably do little more then act as breeders due to their very short lifespan, thus also excluding them.
Human males are better adapted for the N7 destroyer. Men are naturally taller and stronger then women, and could handle the suit much better.
Turian females rarely serve past their thirty years of required service, making them a very rare find. Be glad they even added a female turian to the game.
Alliance Infiltrations Unites are made to look female. There are no male versions.
